Scenthound / FCI Group 6 · Purebred · Sweden's most celebrated hound — a noble tricolor scenthound created by Count Adolf Hamilton, bred to track lone hare and fox through deep Nordic snow
The Hamiltonstövare (Hamilton Hound) is Sweden's most recognizable native breed — a strikingly beautiful tricolor scenthound developed in the late 19th century by Count Adolf Hamilton, the founder of the Swedish Kennel Club. Hamilton crossed English Foxhounds with German scenthounds (Hanoverian and Holsteiner Hounds) and Swedish farm dogs to produce a superior all-weather hunting companion capable of tracking hare and fox alone through dense Swedish forests and deep snow. Unlike many pack hounds, the Hamiltonstövare was specifically designed to hunt solo alongside a single hunter — a key distinction that shaped its temperament into something more independent and thoughtful than a typical pack hound.
First exhibited at the Stockholm Dog Show in 1886, the breed was named in honor of its creator after his death. FCI recognized the Hamiltonstövare under Group 6 (Scent Hounds). It remains primarily a hunting breed in Scandinavia, with its tricolor coat of black saddle, tan markings, and white patches considered one of the most handsome patterns in the hound world. Outside Sweden, the breed is still relatively rare — but those who discover the Hamiltonstövare are invariably captivated by its combination of physical elegance and loyal, even-tempered personality.

The Hamiltonstövare is even-tempered, friendly, and adaptable — considerably easier to live with than many scent hound breeds. Their solo-hunting heritage means they developed a closer relationship with their single handler than pack breeds, making them more responsive and biddable in a home environment.
The Hamiltonstövare is a robust, healthy breed with few significant hereditary issues. Swedish breeders maintain rigorous health-testing programs, and the breed benefits from a strong, diverse gene pool within Scandinavia.
The Hamiltonstövare suits active owners who want a handsome, healthy, and even-tempered hound. They need daily vigorous exercise and a secure yard. Their gentle nature makes them excellent family dogs, and their relative trainability compared to other hounds makes them more accessible to dedicated first-time hound owners. The primary challenge is managing their strong nose outdoors.
Hamiltonstövares adapt reasonably well to boarding due to their sociable nature. Choose a facility with individual runs and outdoor exercise time. Their strong nose means they may become fixated on smells from other animals — ensure your boarder keeps them securely leashed during outdoor time. Pack familiar food to avoid digestive upsets.
Budget approximately $120–$220 per month for a Hamiltonstövare.
Hamiltonstövare mixes are uncommon outside Scandinavia. Their excellent temperament makes any hound cross likely to inherit good family traits.
