The Spanish Water Dog — Perro de Agua Español — is an ancient working breed from the Iberian Peninsula with roots stretching back at least a thousand years. A true multi-purpose dog, the Spanish Water Dog has historically served as sheepherder, cattle herder, retrieving waterfowl, and assistant to fishermen — performing all these jobs with equal competence. The breed is most closely associated with Andalusia in southern Spain, where it worked the region's marshes, estuaries, and farmland with remarkable versatility.
A medium-sized breed weighing 31–49 lbs, the Spanish Water Dog is immediately identifiable by its dense, curly or corded coat — which can form natural cords when left ungroomed — in solid or particolored patterns of black, brown, beige, white, or black-and-white. The coat is never brushed, only trimmed, and is fully functional as weather protection for a working water dog. Spanish Water Dogs are athletic, intelligent, and intensely devoted to their family — with a natural wariness of strangers that makes them excellent watchdogs. They are highly trainable and excel in herding, agility, and water sports.
