Overview

The Shollie is a designer crossbreed that blends two distinct dogs: the German Shepherd, the iconic all-purpose working dog, and the Border Collie, the world's premier herding dog. Breeders combine the two hoping to pair the German Shepherd's best traits — keen intelligence and a strong protective drive — with the Border Collie's unmatched intelligence and an obsessive work ethic, all in one companion.

As a first-generation mix, the Shollie is not a standardized breed, so puppies — even littermates — can vary in size, coat, and personality depending on which parent they take after. Most are large dogs, typically weighing around the range shown above. The best way to picture an individual Shollie is to get to know both parent breeds.

Temperament

Shollies tend to be loyal, confident, and highly trainable — and, from the Border Collie side, intensely intelligent, energetic, and driven. From its German Shepherd parent it often inherits keen intelligence and a strong protective drive, while the Border Collie contributes unmatched intelligence and an obsessive work ethic. The blend usually makes an affectionate, family-oriented companion, but because temperament can lean either way, early socialization and consistent, positive handling are important to bring out the best of both parents.

Exercise

This is an energetic mix that needs a solid hour or more of vigorous exercise every day, plus mental challenges to stay happy. Long walks, running, active play, and training games all help burn off its energy — without enough outlet it can become bored and destructive.

Grooming

Grooming is moderate: a brush once or twice a week keeps the coat healthy, with more attention during seasonal shedding. Bathe occasionally, and keep up with nail trims, ear checks, and tooth brushing.

Training

With at least one highly intelligent parent, the Shollie is usually quick to learn and enjoys having its mind engaged. Keep training positive, reward-based, and varied to hold its interest, and provide puzzle toys or jobs to prevent boredom. Early socialization ensures a confident, well-mannered adult.

Health

Mixed-breed dogs often enjoy some 'hybrid vigor,' but the Shollie can still inherit any of the health conditions common to its parent breeds. Owners should be aware of hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and epilepsy. Buying from a breeder who health-tests both the German Shepherd and the Border Collie parents, keeping your dog at a healthy weight, and staying current with routine veterinary care are the best ways to support a long, healthy life.

Fun Facts About Shollie

🧠

Off-the-Charts Intelligence

Border Collies are ranked No. 1 for canine intelligence; German Shepherds are No. 3. The Shollie may be the most intelligent medium-large hybrid combination in existence.

🎯

Obsessive Workers

Border Collies are famous for obsessively working until they collapse. Shollies inherit this drive - without adequate work and stimulation they will redirect energy destructively.
