The Small Blue Gascony is a medium-sized French scent hound from the ancient Gascony region of southwestern France. It was developed as a smaller, more nimble counterpart to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne â one of the oldest and most celebrated of all French hound breeds. While the Grand Bleu was built for hunting large game in packs, the Petit Bleu was selectively refined for hunting hare, requiring greater speed, agility, and the ability to work in lower, denser cover. Despite the size reduction, it retains the same striking blue-mottled (black and white ticked) coat with tan markings and the characteristic long, pendulous ears of the Gascon hound family.
The Small Blue Gascony is recognized by the FCI under Group 6 and is most commonly found in France, where it is still primarily kept as a working hunting dog. It has a melodious, carrying bay that is the hallmark of the Gascon hound tradition.
