The Irish Red and White Setter is the original setter of Ireland, predating the solid mahogany Irish Setter by at least a century. Developed in the 17th century as a bird dog for setting game — crouching low to indicate birds for hunters using nets — the Red and White was once more common than its solid-colored cousin and nearly vanished in the late 1800s as the fashionable all-red Irish Setter rose to prominence. Dedicated Irish breeders revived the breed in the early 20th century.
A medium-to-large sporting breed weighing 42–60 lbs, the Irish Red and White Setter is easily distinguished by its predominantly white coat with solid red patches, providing excellent visibility in the field. In character, they share the friendly, energetic, and affectionate nature of the Irish Setter but are generally considered slightly more focused in the field and calmer in the home. They are athletic dogs that excel at hunting, agility, and obedience — and make warm, playful family companions for active households.

Irish Red and White Setters can be trained with patience and consistency, though they may occasionally test boundaries. With proper socialization they can do well with children, though supervision is always wise.
Irish Red and White Setters need regular daily exercise to maintain a healthy weight and an even temperament. They are versatile companions who enjoy active outings but are equally content to relax at home after their needs are met.
Irish Red and White Setters have a short, low-maintenance coat that requires minimal grooming compared to longer-haired breeds. A consistent basic routine keeps them clean, comfortable, and healthy.
Irish Red and White Setters are moderately trainable and respond well to patient, consistent positive reinforcement. They benefit from clear expectations and a calm, confident trainer who establishes routines early.
Keep sessions short — 10 to 15 minutes — and always end on a success. Enrolling in a puppy or adult obedience class provides structured learning and valuable socialization.
Irish Red and White Setters are generally healthy for their size, though regular screening helps catch issues early. Responsible breeders screen breeding stock for the most common conditions, significantly reducing risk in puppies from health-tested parents.
A Irish Red and White Setter fits well with families or individuals who can provide moderate daily exercise and consistent companionship. They adapt reasonably well to various living situations as long as their exercise and social needs are met. Not ideal for owners away from home for long hours without a pet care solution in place.
