The Finnish Lapphund is an ancient herding breed from Lapland — the region spanning northern Finland, Sweden, and Norway — where the indigenous Sámi people used it for centuries to herd and manage reindeer. Descended from spitz-type dogs that traveled with Sámi nomads across the Arctic tundra, the Finnish Lapphund developed remarkable stamina, cold tolerance, and a calm, biddable temperament suited to working closely with reindeer herds over vast distances.
A medium-sized breed weighing 33–53 lbs, the Finnish Lapphund has a profuse double coat that provides exceptional insulation against Arctic cold and comes in virtually any color with a markedly different shade on the undercoat. They are renowned for their gentle, friendly, and deeply people-oriented nature — the Lapphund is one of the more social and trainable of the Nordic breeds. They make outstanding family dogs, adapting equally well to active outdoor lifestyles and quieter suburban homes, and are known for their characteristic "startle-and-recover" instinct developed to avoid reindeer hooves.
