Watch this video for a quick overview of the English Springer Spaniel — one of the most versatile and enthusiastic sporting breeds.
The English Springer Spaniel is one of the oldest and most versatile sporting breeds, developed in England to flush ("spring") game birds from dense cover for hunters. Their athletic ability, keen nose, and biddable nature made them indispensable hunting companions for centuries. Today they serve equally well as enthusiastic family companions, field trial competitors, and detection dogs used by law enforcement to sniff out drugs, explosives, and even cell phones in prisons.
There are two distinct types of English Springer Spaniels: field-bred (leaner, shorter coat, higher drive) and show-bred (heavier, longer coat, calmer temperament). Field-bred Springers are working machines that require intense daily exercise; show-bred Springers are more manageable for active families. Know which type you're getting before you commit — the difference in energy level is significant.
English Springer Spaniels are friendly, playful, and outgoing. They love everyone and get along exceptionally well with children and other dogs. Their enthusiasm is their trademark — everything is exciting to a Springer, from a walk to greeting a visitor to finding a scent trail in the backyard.
Springers need 60–90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. They excel at swimming, fetch, trail running, agility, and field sports. Without adequate exercise they become destructive and anxious.
Springers are enthusiastic travelers who adapt well to new environments. Their medium size may fit in some airline cabins; check airline policies. Exercise them thoroughly before any travel to reduce in-transit energy.
Springers are highly trainable and eager to please — they rank consistently in top obedience trial performances. Positive reinforcement works beautifully. They pick up commands quickly and love having a job to do.
Athletic, low-shedding, and highly trainable. The Springerdoodle inherits the Springer's enthusiasm and the Poodle's intelligence — a popular choice for active allergy-prone families.
Both Spaniel types combined — resulting in an enthusiastic, nose-driven hunting companion that's slightly calmer and smaller than a pure Springer. Very popular in the UK.
