The Catalan Sheepdog (Gos d'Atura Català — Catalan for "shepherd's dog of Catalonia") is one of Spain's oldest herding breeds, developed in the Pyrenean foothills and mountain valleys of Catalonia to manage sheep and cattle across rugged terrain. References to this shaggy, long-coated herder appear in Catalan texts as far back as the 14th century, and the breed was well established as the working dog of Catalan shepherds for hundreds of years before formal documentation began. The breed gained unexpected historical prominence during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), when both Republican and Nationalist forces used Catalan Sheepdogs as military messenger dogs and guard dogs — their trainability, intelligence, and boldness made them effective in battlefield conditions. FCI recognized the breed under Group 1.
