🐾 Overview

The Campeiro Bulldog (Buldogue Campeiro) is a rugged working bulldog from southern Brazil, descended from old European bulldogs brought by settlers. For generations it worked on cattle ranches and in slaughterhouses, gripping and holding cattle — a demanding job that shaped its strength, courage, and tenacity.

Powerfully built and athletic with a broad head and muscular frame, it is a functional, working-type bulldog rather than an exaggerated show dog, and it wears a short coat in a range of colors. Brave and determined yet loyal and steady with its family, it is a hardy breed closely tied to Brazil's rural heritage. It is recognized by Brazil's national kennel club.

😊 Temperament & Personality

Brave, loyal, and determined, the Campeiro Bulldog is a devoted family dog with strong protective and working instincts. It is calm and affectionate with its people, courageous in the face of a challenge, and naturally watchful. Its working tenacity means it needs a confident owner and early socialization to become a well-balanced companion.

🏃 Exercise & Activity Needs

A working bulldog with real drive, it needs a good hour of daily exercise plus activities that engage its strength and mind. Walks, play, and purposeful tasks keep it fit and content. While tough and energetic, it should not be over-exercised in extreme heat, and regular activity helps keep it in hard, healthy condition.

✂️ Grooming & Coat Care

The short coat is very easy to care for, needing only a weekly brush and occasional bath. Keep any facial folds clean and dry to prevent irritation, and maintain routine nail trims, ear checks, and dental care. Overall grooming demands are minimal.

🎓 Training

Intelligent and willing but strong-willed, the Campeiro Bulldog responds best to firm, fair, consistent, reward-based training and thorough early socialization. Building mutual respect and clear boundaries is key with such a powerful, determined breed. Given proper guidance, it is a loyal, capable, and well-mannered dog.

🏥 Health & Common Issues

A generally hardy, functional breed with a lifespan of around 10–12 years, benefiting from its working rather than exaggerated conformation. As with muscular bulldog types, worth watching are hip and joint health, skin-fold care, and heat sensitivity. Keeping the dog lean and fit, plus routine veterinary care, supports its robust constitution.

🍽️ Feeding Guide

The Campeiro Bulldog does best on a good-quality complete dog food matched to its age, size, and activity level. As a rough guide, a typical adult eats about 2½–3¾ cups of dry food per day, split into two meals — but a hard-working or very active dog needs more, while a couch companion needs less. Use a large-breed formula and avoid heavy exercise right after meals to reduce the risk of bloat.

📏 Daily Portion Guide

Puppies: 3 meals a day of a puppy formula to fuel growth.
Active adults: around 2½–3¾ cups daily, in two meals, adjusted to keep a trim waistline.
Seniors (7+ yrs): slightly fewer calories and, if needed, a joint-supporting formula as they slow down.

🚫 Foods to Avoid

Never feed chocolate, grapes or raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol (a sweetener found in some gums and peanut butters), macadamia nuts, or cooked bones. Keep treats to no more than about 10% of daily calories so they don't crowd out balanced nutrition or lead to weight gain.

💰 Cost of Owning a Campeiro Bulldog

Where puppies are available, a Campeiro Bulldog from a responsible breeder typically costs around $1,000–$2,500, with rarer bloodlines and imported dogs sitting at the higher end. Rescue or adoption, where possible, is far less — usually a few hundred dollars in fees.

📅 Typical Monthly Costs

Food, treats & preventatives, routine care and supplies together usually run about $110–$200 per month for a healthy adult, not counting emergencies or boarding.

📊 Lifetime Estimate

Over a full lifetime the total cost of ownership generally lands around $18,000–$28,000, including the purchase price. Pet insurance ($15–$45/month) and a small emergency fund are smart ways to cushion against unexpected veterinary bills.
