Herding Dog / FCI Group 1 · Purebred · The Czech Republic's ancient herding dog documented since the 1300s — possibly an ancestor of the German Shepherd, agile, devoted, and deeply intelligent
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog (Chodský Pes — "Chodish Dog") is the Czech Republic's oldest herding breed, with documented history stretching back to the 14th century. The breed takes its alternative name from the Chod people — a distinct ethnic group along the historic Bohemian-Bavarian border who kept these dogs as sheep herders and border guards from at least the 1300s. The Chod people were granted special border rights by the Bohemian crown in exchange for maintaining the frontier, and their dogs were an integral part of this defensive function — guarding flocks at night while also patrolling the border against poachers and intruders.
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog's resemblance to a smaller, more elegant German Shepherd Dog is notable — the two breeds are often compared, and there is genuine historical speculation that the Bohemian Shepherd Dog contributed to the development of the German Shepherd Dog in the late 19th century, as the breed's range overlapped with the German breeding programs that produced the GSD. FCI recognized the Bohemian Shepherd Dog in 1984 under Group 1. Still rare outside the Czech Republic, the breed has been gaining international recognition as owners discover its combination of GSD-like intelligence and working ability in a lighter, more agile, and often easier-to-manage package.

The Bohemian Shepherd Dog is highly intelligent, loyal, and versatile — often described as everything people love about the German Shepherd Dog in a softer, more affectionate package. They are deeply bonded to their family and noticeably more people-oriented than many working shepherd breeds.
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog is a healthy breed with a notably longer average lifespan than the German Shepherd Dog — partly attributed to the smaller gene pool carefully managed by Czech breeders and the breed's moderate size.
The Bohemian Shepherd Dog is an outstanding choice for active families who admire the German Shepherd but want a slightly smaller, softer, and longer-lived dog with an equally remarkable mind. They excel with experienced dog owners but are also accessible to motivated first-timers who commit to training and socialization. Their combination of loyalty, intelligence, beauty, and health makes them one of the best-kept secrets in the working dog world.
Bohemian Shepherd Dogs are adaptable and social, making them easier boarders than many working breeds. Choose a facility with individual attention and daily exercise — their active minds need stimulation even during a stay. They do best with a consistent routine; brief the facility on their daily schedule. Pack familiar bedding and toys.
Budget approximately $120–$210 per month for a Bohemian Shepherd Dog.
Bohemian Shepherd Dog mixes are uncommon outside the Czech Republic. Their intelligence and working temperament blend exceptionally well with other shepherd breeds.
