The Australian Kelpie is a legendary herding breed developed in Australia in the late 19th century from British collies brought by settlers. It was bred to work sheep across vast, hot, and rugged stations, and it became famous for its stamina, initiative, and ability to control large flocks with little direction.

Exceptionally intelligent, energetic, and devoted, the Australian Kelpie lives to work and thinks for itself. It bonds closely with its handler, is alert and eager, and can be reserved with strangers. This is not a dog content with a quiet life — without a job or serious activity it becomes bored, frustrated, and destructive.
Few breeds are more demanding: the Kelpie needs one to two hours or more of hard physical and mental exercise every day. It thrives on herding, running, fetch, agility, and any task that engages its problem-solving mind. It is poorly suited to apartment or sedentary living and truly comes alive with a purpose.
The short, dense double coat is very low-maintenance — a weekly brush keeps it healthy, with more frequent brushing during the twice-yearly shedding seasons. The Australian Kelpie does best on a good-quality complete dog food matched to its age, size, and activity level.
